Thanks for writing this, it clarifies a lot. Your point about influencing the 'attitudes and ethics of those around us' resonates deeply. As an educator, I see daily the crucial impact of shaping the next generations' values. It's a foundational, bottom-up approach to progress.
Parenting as protest. Love it. (And thank you, I see that maybe I am not alone in feeling like the heels and eyelash extensions that are rapidly replacing “barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen” is actually, somehow, a step backward). I’m not at all surprised that the kids’ pediatrician saw value in what you’re teaching your boys and has now incorporated it into how she works with her patients. That speaks volumes about you and all the small (but actually very big) ways you’re modeling how to raise thoughtful, grounded humans who are learning not to buy into the bullshit. These things are not easy to teach. They require constant exhausting intention and, as you described, often mean standing up to nearly every message and messenger in your path, including our own parents. Every moment like this matters, and each one pushes back against the deeply rooted misogynistic machine that still shapes so much of our culture. Thank you for the reminder that doing something is better than doing nothing— that those of us even thinking about how to do all this better are in fact doing our best, doing what we can, and truly making a difference.
Thank you, Cece, for your thoughtful words! You are an incredible model and supermom to your boys - I'm constantly amazed by all that you do, and wish such grace. I'm trying to remember that the small, daily acts of protest indeed add up, perhaps more than the occasional big ones.

Ps, I too, cannot imagine but also very much look forward to a day when our kids will actually make us dinner. 😱🙌🏽
RIGHT?!!
